Commander League

Jan7, 2021

Commander League strikes a balance between competitive and casual Commander, fun and fair play. Commander League emphasizes a multi-player MTG element that is structured and game scores are recorded during a ten week season. Commander League uses current multi-player commander rules found http://mtgcommander.net/rules.php

Games are recorded upon a Commander League template shared online using Google Sheets. Our League has been using webcam play over discord (Spelltable currently only allows up to 4 players) Using a commander deck that can be different each game and played multi-player with 4-6 players. At the start of the game the organizer starts a timer for 1 and half hours. Commander damage is recorded cumulative from each commander eg. 2 players attack for 5 each is 10 combined.

Five scores are recorded during play: Participation (1), Theme-point (1) Wild-point (3), Sportsmanship (3), and Highlander (3).

Participation: Each game will award each player who has successfully completed a game one point.

Theme-point: Each season has a theme (decided at the start of the season) that will reward a player with one point if their deck is in theme. Only the highlander can win a theme point and this is determined at the end of the game if the player has the condition on the field: example low power theme only low power cards are present on the field at the end of the game. Example Wizards theme, there is a Wizard creature on the field at the end of game.

Wild-point: At the beginning of each game, each player writes a secret win condition (send via discord to organizer or determined otherwise) eg: First player to get three non-basic lands. Eg, first player to play a Sol Ring. Each wild-point conditions are placed in a hat and one condition is drawn at random. This wild point The first player to achieve the wild-point condition is awarded 3 points. There can only be one point awarded per round.

Sportsmanship: Player conduct is encouraged in Commander League. At the end of game, each player votes in secret for the player they recognised as best to play with (this could include the deck, or style of play). Players are not allowed to vote for themselves. The player with the most votes wins, there can only be one player awarded per game and the award is worth 3 points.

Highlander: The player last standing is Highlander for the game and is awarded 3 points. If no one has won within the time limit, a D6 is rolled to determine the length of extended play: each player after the player’s time expired receives an addition (1-3) turns. In the case where extended play runs out, then the player with the most non-token permanents is declared winner. Any time there is a draw, then a d20 is rolled to determine the winner.

The player with the most points at the end of the season is declared Commander League Seasonal Champion. There should be prizes to recognize first, second, third and fourth place as per player contributions (to be determined at the start of the event usually $5 per game for a prize pool). At the end of season the top-four may be invited for a three game mini-season (with all the above rules) where the top winner is then declared the official Commander League Seasonal Champion and is rewarded with a booster box (prize pool permitting).

In the event of a tie we will go through  to find a winner in the following order
